We need your help to find a 1 y.o. female Bulldog who went missing on Xmas Eve am. Last seen getting into a dark gray BMW SUV (or similar)around 11 am on Sicklerville Rd in Sicklerville, NJ. Her family come to our rescue events and in fact, their son Gregory, is always a helper at the costume contest, etc. Gregory has ......Downs Syndrome and is completely distraught over Lola's loss.They've contacted the police, animal hospitals and shelters. This photo was taken on their way to the Octo-Bull-Fest this past Halloween. Lola is red brindle and white and has cherry eye on the right eye. Please post her picture where you can. The Best of Times & The Worst of Times ...

People are doing things
they have never done before.
Our new business -
MEDFORD COMPANY STORE
AN AMERICAN HANDCRAFT
& ANTIQUES COOPERATIVE
opened on Tuesday.
I am thrilled with the response!

A lot of old customers
have already come back
(we were originally an antiques shop)
and so many NEW customers
have been in -
with interest in other things!
I've sold quite a few collars
and leashes here already!

Shoppers today are being more careful
with their money,
and more specific about who gets it.
I personally like to see my money
go right into the hands
of the person who took the risk.
I guess that comes from many years
of being a business owners,
of BEING the people taking the risk
& providing a living for our employees.

I respect someone
who has put their personal best
into developing their craft,
identifying their target market,
& designing to meet the wants & needs
of that particular audience.

Success depends on more than
having talent & having personal goals.
When there is rationale
behind what someone creates,
I am driven to support that person,
even if it's a craft for which I have
no particular use.
I am intrigued by innovation.

So in these harder economic times,
perhaps the worst of times,
I see people discovering their talents.
And for many - they are finding
the vision & skill
that might otherwise
have gone undiscovered.
It is very very cool.

We're still seeking
talented artists & crafters.
We have a certain target retail audience
and I believe we are hitting our mark.
Time will tell.

My Dog, My Hero

There goes my hero - watch him as he goes ...

Our dogs are all heroes – for many reasons and in so many ways. Some are so brave they scare away monsters; others so aware they protect us from shadows & dust bunnies. Some bring out the best in us while others forgive the worst; many teach us lessons of recovery and survival. They love unconditionally & without judgement, filling the hearts of some people who thought they might never be loved.

I remember a therapy dog – “Chivas” – another kind of hero. This shiny majestic Golden Retriever regularly visited a convalescent home, proudly attired in his jester’s hat or his Superman cape, and always headed straight over to his favorite old gent, a stoke victim who spoke only one word - “Chivas”.

Tell us about your hero – it doesn’t have to be a sensational story – just a short one, even just a sentence or two. Maybe your hero made you laugh one day when you were sad. Maybe she fetched your paper during a storm. Maybe he’s a service dog, or miraculously barked and woke you when your house was on fire – or found an abandoned kitten. Or maybe he ate that broccoli you hated as a child.

My dogs love to roll in the dirt .We have dry crusty dirt - the kind that feels like sandpaper scratching their backs through their thick fur - I guess. I don't roll in it. I do, however, often vacuum these dogs in a futile effort to remove the nice scratchy sandy dirt from their thick fur.

Several weeks ago my husband fenced off a favorite dirt rolling area and seeded it to grow new grass. And it grew and it grew. A few days ago, the fence was removed and the grass looks - grassy. My dogs find new things - like grass - very interesting and inviting and naturally tried it out in the very organic ways that dogs will. I called them back into the house and they all came running except for one. Mimi, my PBT, was very interested in one area of the grass and was staring at it intensly & ignoring me. I walked out to look at what had her so interested, expecting to find an injured bird or something like that and saw nothing unusual. I coaxed her to com'on along.

A while later I heard her barking - serious barking - and saw her herding two of my dogs back into the house through the doggy door. Mimi planted herself in front of the doggy door making it impossible for the others to come back out.

Later still I was about to run errands and checked to make sure everyone was inside. Mimi was out at the particular spot , asleep on the ground. Strange - really strange. I walked over to check her and she jumped up wagging her tail and doing her happy dance.She had dug. Great.Just what we didn't need - Mimi digging up the new grass.

But she HADN'T "dug". Mimi had uncovered a litter of baby bunnies and had been laying there to protect them !

I'm amazed. Completely amazed. First of all, the obvious - my Pitbull found these babies -that ANY dog would find them and not destroy them , even accidentally ...
(Steinbeck's Lennie " Can I still tend the rabbits, George?" ) well that simply amazes me.But she didn't even really dig. She didn't even destroy the nest.There were scratch marks in the ground in the typical "digger" pattern. But she stopped !! Why ? How did she know to stop ? How did she know that these were not toys. Or prey. How did she know they were vulnerable,delicate babies that she needed to protect ? So that amazes me.

But I'm also amazed just at the fact that there is a nest of baby rabbits in my yard.
Maybe I'm just very simple . Well I know I'm simple. Why my yard ? Kittens under the barn, kittens in the work room - and we don't have a cat !And now bunnies in the middle of the yard.

I know millions of people have had this experience and won't find it so amazing. And Millions would find it a nuisance.I know this isn't the first batch of bunnies that were born in my yard,and I know they are born everywhere every day. But these were born in MY yard, and MY dog found them and didn't kill them, and I got to see them and it totally thrills me.I'm still amazed. There is so much life in my yard.

Handmade Faire 2009

Soooo ... Big Doggy Bling will be there !
I must get crackin' and sew sew sew.
I haven't participated in a craft fair before.
I guess that means I'm a craft fair virgin !!
I'll be setting out a nice display of
collars & leashes and some harnesses.
I'll be sure to have on hand
a good selection of collars for Greyhounds !

I'm looking forward to the opportunity
to demonstrate my specialty leashes and limited slip collars.
I wonder if people will have their dogs with them !??
Hmmm.

Canine Couture !

It is so easy to please dog lovers !
When you care about dressing their dogs right,
they are happy!
I can do it.
Whatever someone wants - I can make it.
Sometimes I have to figure it out first,
but I CAN make it.
It's so satisfying when someone tells me
I made exactly what they wanted !

When somebody is spending their hard earned money
to style their pets,
it matters.
Whether it's a great big harness
or a tiny little collar
- I'll go to any length -
I'll search for fabrics, ribbons,
special hardware or webbing -
I'll make ribbon from fabric,
or I'll provide links
to great fabric and trim merchants
on etsy.
It's a rush, kind of - getting it right.
I like this.

Britty Kitties

Ahhh ... to blog.

Most certainly a bright end to a dark winter - the birth of the Britty Kitties.
Feral Momma found her way into our shop workroom when it was brutally cold outside. Phantom.

I started leaving food for her and she stayed. Usually what I saw was her shadow, and sometimes her face. She waited every day and eventually passed close to me on her way to a freshly filled bowl. She never used the litter pan.

They were born on St.Patrick's day - 4 loud little brats - in a crude "nest" she arranged in an antique cabinet. We outfitted a large dog crate with a rug and blanket and covered it a bit to make it warm. We moved them there on the their third day of life. Overnight they had doubled in size. Momma joined them and never wanders from them.
Now she uses the litter pan.
